Dr David John Williams

David Williams is Professor of Geotechnical Engineering at The University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, where he initiated and directed the industry-funded Geotechnical Engineering Centre and manages the industry-funded Large Open Pit Project. He has over 40 years of teaching, research, and consulting experience and is internationally recognised for his expertise and experience in mine waste management and mine closure, particularly tailings management. He was a member of the Expert Panel engaged to investigate the technical causes of the fatal Brumadinho Tailings Dam I failure in Brazil in 2019, he sits on numerous ITRBs worldwide, and he initiated and largely delivers the AusIMM Professional Certificate Course in Tailings Management.
