I’m attending an event in May that I’ve had my eye on for some time, but for various reasons haven’t yet made it to: The Electric Mine, organised by International Mining.

It has a reputation as the go-to gathering for mining companies, OEMs and consultants who are interested in the technical aspects of mine electrification. This year, it takes place in Lisbon, Portugal, from May 5–7.

What interests me about this topic, is that the industry feels like it’s entering a more mature phase of its electrification journey.

For years, the focus was on proving that battery-electric equipment could work. Increasingly, that question is being answered. Underground, companies like Sandvik and Epiroc have moved beyond pilots, with expanding BEV fleets and diesel-electric machines acting as stepping stones toward full fleet electrification. Meanwhile, miners such as Boliden are demonstrating the productivity, ventilation and cost benefits that can come with the shift.

Surface mining remains a tougher challenge, but momentum is building. Fortescue and Liebherr are advancing battery-electric haulage, while renewed interest in trolley assist and dynamic charging, from players such as ABB and Caterpillar, suggests multiple technology pathways are emerging.

But to me, the bigger opportunity isn’t simply replacing diesel machines. It’s redesigning mines around energy. That means thinking beyond vehicles to charging infrastructure, grid integration, microgrids, battery chemistries and energy management platforms – in other words, systems-level electrification.

Several themes look set to shape the next decade: smarter charging and power management, tighter integration between electrification and renewable energy systems, and perhaps most significantly, mine designs that are optimised for electrification from day one.

Seen through this lens, electrification is about productivity and resilience as well as sustainability. That’s what makes the discussions in Portugal feel so timely.

Will you be there too? If so, drop me a note. Let’s connect.
