Hello everyone,

This month’s editorial theme on The Intelligent Miner – technology and data – is a juicy one (can you tell that it’s my favourite to write about?!) It’s also one that I’ve had the privilege to explore recently with various clients across the mining ecosystem.

While each piece approached the topic from a different angle, they all pointed to the same underlying truth: what’s the point in collecting data if it’s not being used to drive tangible value, or, if only a tiny portion of the insights it offers can be put into action?

That idea was captured succinctly in an article by Eclipse Data Innovations which argued that large-scale industries are awash with data but struggle to extract meaningful, actionable insights from it. For mines, this is a familiar challenge: datasets exist, but they’re often fragmented, disconnected and underutilised.

At a strategic level, Deloitte’s Tracking the Trends 2026 report reinforces just how central data has become. AI and digital technologies are foundational to building ‘smart’ mining operations, where real-time data underpins decision-making across the value chain. It includes some amazing examples of what can be achieved with the right architectures and partnerships.

But the real test is execution. In a recent article Kal Tire, explored what it means to be strategic in an operational context, like tyre management. Mines already collect vast amounts of data on tyre performance, yet the real value comes from integrating that data into maintenance planning, cost control and risk reduction. It’s a practical example of how better decisions (not more data) drive results.

Across these perspectives, there is a clear message. The industry’s next challenge isn’t capturing more data or deploying more tools, it’s connecting what already exists and embedding it into everyday workflows. Because ultimately, a competitive advantage doesn’t come from having data. It comes from using it.
